Our International Dairy Goat Registry (RE: IDGR) San Clemente Island goat Description is taken from Dr Larson’s research paper, as she analyzed the goat while she was on San Clemente Island. This chart is also from information from Rivetti Ranch, who is one of the only remaining Founding Breeders off the Island. Some of the Horn types are old IDGR photos from another Founding herd off San Clemente Island.
We give credits for the photos to the breeders and owners who are listed underneath each photo. Each of those folks hold the COPYRIGHT for those photos. IDGR has used their photos by permission only. As such, these slides may NOT be shared or reproduced or any photos reproduced without written permission of IDGR.
The full Description of the San Clemente Island goat that International Dairy Goat uses is found on SCI Description page. This will be ever-evolving, as we learn more about these special Heritage Breed Goats.
San Clemente Island goat Coat Colors
These coat colors are NOT the Scientific colors. The purpose of displaying these coat colors is for the purposes of the Official Registration. Coat colors are part of the Identification of the goat. Because of this, we are describing What You See.

San Clemente Island Teat Types
NOTE: San Clemente Island goats who have spur, fish or multiple teats are NOT to be culled. We are not raising show goats who are bred to win in the show ring. We are raising a Heritage breed of goat. We are preserving the true characteristics of the San Clemente Island Goat. Geneticts warn us NOT to cull for extra teats. It is vital for us to leave the breed as it was in the wild on San Clemente Island. So we repeat… PLEASE DO NOT cull for multiple teat types.
NOTE about showing the San Clemente Island goat. Be very cautious about showing this breed in non-San Clemente Island goat shows. RE: example in dairy goat shows. Most dairy goat shows judge animals on a Unified Score Card. A Unified Score Card is very damaging to breeds in many ways, as it is more of a one-size conformation and characteristics fits all breeds. The Unified Score Card has already turned many dairy goat breeds’ conformation into the same for all breeds. Thus we have lost many of the true characteristics of many breeds. Please be super chareful when showing the San Clemente Island Goat in non-Official non-San Clemente Island goats. Please DO NOT cull or raise San Clemente Island goats for who wins in the show ring. If you do breed and/or cull for who wins in the show ring, you will destroy the characteristics of this true breed.
Note: Many breeders tell us that the extra teats on San Clemente Island goats actually have a cystern for holding milk and produce milk. That is NOT typical of most dairy breeds, however.
We are showing teat types just so that we know what to call them.
